India's opener Shubman Gill will not play in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati due to an ongoing neck injury. The match kicks off on Saturday, and Rishabh Pant will act as captain, as he did in Kolkata when Gill had to retire hurt.
Gill arrived in Guwahati on November 19 after a period of observation in a Kolkata hospital. However, on Friday morning, the BCCI confirmed his unavailability for the match, and he will return to Mumbai for further evaluation of his condition. Medical professionals have cautioned that rushing back too soon could lead to additional neck spasms, prompting the player to take more time to rest.
This incident raises concerns about Gill’s participation in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, which starts on November 30. The announcement of the ODI squad is expected by November 23. Currently, there has been no official word on his replacement, leaving India’s management to choose from B Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, or Nitish Kumar Reddy to fill the empty spot.
Gill’s injury traces back to the Kolkata Test, where he batted only three balls in the first innings before retiring from the game. The BCCI informed that he would take no further part in the match, which India ultimately lost by 30 runs after being bowled out for just 93 runs while chasing a target of 124.
Prior to departing for Guwahati, India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stated that the team's priority is Gill's health. He mentioned, “He is indeed recovering well. The final call will be taken tomorrow evening by the medical team. Even with full recovery, we cannot risk another spasm during the match,” Kotak affirmed.
Gill's absence represents a significant loss for India's batting lineup. Renowned for his reliability in both Tests and limited-overs formats, he has been a pivotal player in the squad. With the second Test imminent, the management must act quickly to secure an appropriate replacement, preserving the team's balance.
Simultaneously, Rishabh Pant, who previously captained India in Kolkata following Gill’s exit, is now tasked with leading the team during the match in Guwahati. His leadership will be essential as they confront a formidable South African team, requiring a careful adjustment of the batting order to mitigate the loss of Gill's expertise and reliability at the top.
Both fans and experts in the cricketing realm are monitoring developments around Gill, knowing that his recovery and possible return for the ODI series are crucial for India’s chances against South Africa in the forthcoming games.
