Roger Mayer, a determined 69-year-old from Australia, wowed audiences at the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2025. Competing in the Masters division, Brown Belt, 94kg class, Mayer took on Gasan Dzhamalutdinov, a robust competitor twenty years his junior. Despite facing a younger opponent, he concluded the match with pride, losing by only one point. “I turned 69 last October, and even though my opponent was 49 and very strong, I was glad he couldn’t take me down or submit me. I fought until the very end, and though I lost by a point, it was a successful experience for me,” Mayer expressed.
For Mayer, participating in the Abu Dhabi championship was a dream come true. He commended the event’s organized nature and the camaraderie among athletes, which created an encouraging atmosphere that left a lasting impression beyond mere medals.
A former law enforcement officer for 35 years, Mayer found his passion for jiu-jitsu after retiring. He trains almost daily near Wollongong, south of Sydney, experiencing both the physical and mental trials of the martial art. Though he had explored martial arts prior, he appreciates jiu-jitsu for the unique challenges it presents, fostering fitness, focus, and a deep sense of achievement.
Mayer’s tale exemplifies the importance of passion and perseverance in sports, regardless of age. Although not driven by the pursuit of titles, his participation reaffirms that age should not hinder embracing challenges or discovering new life goals. His courageous attitude inspires athletes and enthusiasts alike, showcasing how devotion to sport can bridge generations.
During the championship, Mayer received warm applause from fellow competitors and spectators. His journey illuminates the fact that motivation and resilience often outweigh the importance of winning. He reflects the holistic benefits of martial arts, encouraging people to lead active lives regardless of their age.
Roger Mayer's participation at the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Championship stands as a tribute to spirit, resilience, and the unwavering love for sports, leaving an indelible impression on all who witnessed his extraordinary performance.
