Indian tennis icon Rohan Bopanna announced his retirement from professional sport on Saturday, closing a remarkable chapter in a career that spanned over two decades. The 45-year-old veteran, known for his powerful serve and sharp net play, bid farewell after his last appearance at the Paris Masters 1000, where he and partner Alexander Bublik were narrowly defeated in the Round of 32.
Taking to social media, Bopanna emotionally shared, “How do you bid farewell to something that gave your life its meaning? After 20 unforgettable years on tour, it’s time I’m officially hanging up my racquet.” Reflecting on his journey, he added, “From chopping wood in Coorg to strengthen my serve, to standing under the lights of the biggest arenas in the world — it feels surreal. Representing India has been the greatest honour of my life.”
Bopanna is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest tennis players, particularly excelling in doubles and mixed doubles formats. His career highlights include winning the 2017 French Open mixed doubles title with Gabriela Dabrowski and capturing the 2024 Australian Open men’s doubles crown alongside Matthew Ebden. Remarkably, he became the world No. 1 in men’s doubles at age 43, underscoring his longevity and perseverance on the court.
A defining aspect of Bopanna’s career was his partnership with Pakistani star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, famously dubbed the ‘Indo-Pak Express.’ Their collaboration brought hope and unity to tennis fans across South Asia, highlighted by their run to the 2010 US Open men’s doubles final, a milestone for Asian tennis on the world stage.
In addition to the US Open final, Bopanna reached the finals of three more Grand Slam events, including the 2023 US Open men’s doubles with Ebden and two mixed doubles finals at the Australian Open (2018 with Timea Babos and 2023 with Sania Mirza). He also competed in the prestigious ATP Finals in 2012 and 2015, partnering with tennis legends Mahesh Bhupathi and Florin Mergea.
Beyond trophies and records, Bopanna’s career was marked by his relentless work ethic, sportsmanship, and the pride of representing India at major events like the Davis Cup and the Olympics. His retirement marks the end of an era for Indian tennis, but his legacy will inspire future generations for years to come.
As fans and fellow athletes pay tribute, Bopanna’s story remains a testament to dedication, resilience, and the power of sport to bridge divides.
