A 17-year-old student from the British School Jakarta is leading an initiative to bring cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training into schools across Indonesia. Russell James Young, founder of the Beatkeepers Collective, aims to equip young people with lifesaving skills that could significantly improve survival rates during cardiac emergencies.
The initiative was recently showcased at the Jakarta Scholars Symposium 2026, where students presented innovative projects designed to create meaningful social impact. Russell’s project stood out for its focus on public health and emergency preparedness, areas that remain largely overlooked in many educational institutions.
According to data from the Indonesian Cardiology Association (PERKI), cardiac arrest affects around 10 out of every 100,000 people under the age of 35 in Indonesia. The country also records an estimated 300,000 to 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases annually. Despite these numbers, only a small percentage of victims receive immediate assistance from bystanders before professional medical help arrives.
Russell believes that increasing awareness and practical knowledge of CPR can help bridge this critical gap. Through Beatkeepers Collective, he is advocating for basic first-aid and resuscitation training to become more accessible to students, enabling them to act confidently during life-threatening situations.
The initiative focuses on hands-on learning, community engagement, and education campaigns designed to encourage a culture of preparedness. By teaching young people how to respond effectively during emergencies, the program seeks to build a generation capable of providing immediate assistance when every second matters.
Health experts have long emphasized that early CPR intervention can dramatically improve survival chances following cardiac arrest. However, limited public awareness and insufficient training opportunities continue to hinder emergency response efforts in many communities across Indonesia.
Russell’s efforts highlight the growing role of youth leadership in addressing social and health challenges. As Beatkeepers Collective expands its reach, the initiative has the potential to inspire schools, educators, and policymakers to integrate lifesaving skills into everyday learning, helping create safer and more resilient communities throughout the country.
