Russia Launches 400-Drone Attack on Ukraine, Hits 3 Cities

Russia Launches 400-Drone Attack on Ukraine, Hits 3 Cities

Russia carried out a large-scale attack on Ukraine overnight, launching around 400 drones and one ballistic missile, striking multiple cities across the country. Ukrainian officials confirmed the strikes injured at least 15 people and damaged important energy facilities.

This is one of the most intense attacks Ukraine has faced in recent months. The strikes hit several major cities — Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, Vinnytsia, and Kupiansk, targeting both civilian areas and key infrastructure.

What Happened?

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, the Russian military sent hundreds of drones across the country in a coordinated overnight operation. The Ukrainian forces successfully shot down many of them, but 57 drones and one missile still managed to hit 12 key targets.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the attacks mainly targeted Ukraine’s energy systems, which are critical for electricity and water supply. He assured citizens that repair work had already begun and that services in Kryvyi Rih would be restored soon.

“We are now doing our best to restore everything in Kryvyi Rih,” Zelenskiy said.

City-Wise Impact

  • Kryvyi Rih (Zelenskiy’s hometown) suffered major damage.

    • The local power and water supply were cut.

    • A 17-year-old boy was seriously injured and is in critical condition.

    • Officials confirmed that 28 drones and one missile were used in the attack on this city alone.

  • Vinnytsia region reported eight people wounded, with emergency services attending to damaged homes and power facilities.

  • Kharkiv, already a frequent target, was hit with at least 17 explosions in 20 minutes, injuring three people, said Governor Oleh Syniehubov.

  • In the frontline city of Kupiansk, Ukrainian officials earlier reported two people killed in a drone strike.

  • Kyiv, the capital city, saw air defence systems activated, but no major damage or injuries were reported, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Why Is This Happening?

Russia has increased the number of drone and missile strikes this summer. Military experts say this is part of a strategy to break down Ukraine’s energy systems and put pressure on civilians. Russia claims that energy plants are “legitimate targets” because they support Ukraine’s war operations.

Ukrainian President Zelenskiy called for more international support, especially for air defence systems and interceptor drones to stop these attacks.

“Russia does not change its strategy... To stop this terror, we need more air defences and more determination,” Zelenskiy said.

International Response

Following the latest attacks, U.S. President Donald Trump approved additional weapons support for Ukraine, including advanced air defence systems. The move signals continued backing from the West despite ongoing war fatigue and diplomatic challenges.

Ukraine has also responded with limited long-range strikes on Russian targets, but the scale is far smaller compared to Russia’s assault.

The Bigger Picture

This war has lasted more than three years, with thousands of civilian deaths on both sides. While Ukraine fights to protect its land and people, Russia continues to justify its actions as part of its military goals.

But as attacks on homes, power plants, and water systems continue, the suffering of innocent civilians grows.

President Zelenskiy has once again reminded the world that Ukraine cannot face these attacks alone. More help is needed — and needed urgently.

Final Thoughts

This latest wave of strikes shows how serious the situation remains in Ukraine. As the war stretches on, the destruction to daily life becomes harder to fix. It is a reminder that war doesn’t just affect soldiers — it destroys homes, cities, and futures.
