Russian missiles and drones struck Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, early on Monday, killing at least nine people and injuring 46 others, according to local officials. The overnight attack caused severe damage to residential buildings across the city, just a few days after the deadliest assault on Kyiv this year.
Emergency teams continued rescue operations throughout the day as they searched damaged buildings for survivors. Authorities warned that the number of casualties could still increase.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that rescue workers were pulling residents from apartment buildings that were heavily damaged during the attack.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, confirmed that the death toll in the capital had risen to nine, while 46 people were injured. "Unfortunately, this is not the final information," Tkachenko said, adding that rescue operations were still underway.
Emergency services reported that at least 15 residential buildings were damaged or destroyed in different parts of Kyiv.
Among the worst-hit locations was a nine-storey apartment building in the historic Podilskyi district. Officials said the building had been largely destroyed from the fifth floor upward. Rescue workers used ladder trucks to reach residents trapped on the upper floors.
Search operations were also carried out at a 21-storey residential building in the same district. According to Tkachenko, four residential buildings in Podilskyi alone were directly struck during the attack.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two people were killed in Kyiv's eastern Darnytskyi district after falling debris hit a 25-storey apartment building.
Rescue teams continued efforts to free residents trapped on the upper floors.
A fire also broke out in a nearby 30-storey residential building in the district, forcing authorities to evacuate residents.
The latest attack came only days after a large-scale Russian strike on Kyiv early on Thursday that killed 31 people, making it the deadliest attack on the Ukrainian capital this year.
The repeated attacks have caused extensive damage to residential areas and kept emergency services engaged in ongoing rescue efforts.
Reuters witnesses reported hearing multiple explosions in and around Kyiv during the attack. Ukrainian air defence systems were seen responding as Russian drones targeted the city.
Images from Reuters showed rescue workers climbing through the rubble of destroyed apartment buildings and carrying injured residents away on stretchers while smoke filled the surrounding area.
The attack also affected areas outside the capital.
Mykola Kalashnyk, governor of the Kyiv region, said one person was killed and another 15 people were injured in the surrounding region.
In the southern Black Sea port city of Odesa, local administration head Serhiy Lysak said the city also came under attack, with at least one person reported injured.
Ukraine's neighbouring country, Poland, which is a member of NATO and the European Union, temporarily scrambled fighter jets as a precaution during the Russian attack.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had warned residents about the possibility of an imminent Russian strike.
