Samsung Electronics has announced plans to begin operations at its first semiconductor fabrication plant in Yongin, south of Seoul, in 2029, moving the schedule forward by one to two years from its original target of 2030–2031.
The company said the earlier launch is intended to help meet the rapidly increasing demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
Samsung's decision comes as demand for AI-related memory chips continues to grow worldwide. By accelerating production at the Yongin facility, the company aims to strengthen its manufacturing capacity and respond more quickly to market needs.
A Samsung Electronics spokesperson confirmed that the company plans to start operations at its first Yongin fabrication plant in 2029, ahead of the previously announced timeline.
The announcement follows recent investment commitments made by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which last month pledged to invest hundreds of billions of dollars to expand semiconductor production capacity in South Korea.
The investment plans came after President Lee Jae Myung called for measures to reduce regional economic disparities while strengthening the country's semiconductor industry.
Under the government's semiconductor development plan, South Korea aims to double its memory chip production capacity within the next five years.
The strategy includes speeding up the construction of fabrication plants by Samsung and SK Hynix in Yongin, while also developing a new semiconductor cluster in Gwangju to support long-term industry growth.
By bringing forward the opening of its Yongin fabrication plant, Samsung is accelerating its manufacturing expansion as demand for AI memory chips continues to increase. The earlier production schedule also supports South Korea's broader effort to expand domestic semiconductor capacity and strengthen its position in the global chip industry.
