Today marks Sania Mirza's 39th birthday. When reflecting on whether she feels wiser, she shares, “I can't say I'm wiser, but I definitely feel more patient. I find joy in the little things much more now.” The acclaimed former tennis player reveals she isn't keen on grand celebrations, saying, “I enjoy having my family and friends close, yet prefer a low-key day, relishing some personal time with my loved ones.”
Her eyes light up as she discusses her son, Izhaan, born to her and ex-husband Shoaib Malik. “I take great pride in the wonderful person he is becoming. His kindness and empathy are remarkable. He gives me the purest love imaginable. Surprisingly, it's more like he has shaped me into a better mother than I have him,” she expresses.
Regarding Izhaan's interest in sports, Sania replies, “Since my pregnancy, this question has come up frequently. He has a natural affinity for sports and enjoys football, tennis, and swimming. He even plays the drums! Whatever he chooses, it's crucial he finds joy and puts in his best effort. I want him to have the freedom to pursue what makes him happy, just like I was raised.”
On her life after tennis, Sania shares her excitement about this new chapter. “The beauty of being an athlete is the chance to retire young and explore new avenues after a fulfilling career. I feel so fortunate. We've launched our new podcast, I'm exploring pickleball, and running my tennis academy. Plus, I continue with mentorship roles and motivational talks, which I thoroughly enjoy.”
When questioned about a potential return to tennis, she states, “Having been a professional for two decades, I felt confident that my career in that realm was complete, both physically and mentally. When I became pregnant, questions arose about my retirement plans, but deep down, I always envisioned a comeback. However, upon my final retirement, I realized I couldn't bring my best self back to the court, as I had achieved enough. So, a comeback isn’t in my future.”
