Philippines VP Duterte Faces Impeachment

Philippines VP Duterte Faces Impeachment

Post by : Shakul

Philippines Vice President Sara Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives after lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor of charges linked to alleged unexplained wealth and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.. The impeachment vote marked a major escalation in the growing political conflict between the country’s top leaders and could significantly affect Duterte’s future political ambitions ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

The House of Representatives, largely controlled by allies of President Marcos, voted 257-25 in favor of impeachment, while nine lawmakers abstained. The case will now move to the Senate for trial proceedings. The impeachment complaints include accusations related to suspicious bank transactions, misuse of confidential government funds and controversial public statements allegedly threatening the president and his family. Duterte has denied wrongdoing and her legal team said they are prepared to defend her before the Senate.

The political atmosphere in Manila became even more tense shortly before the impeachment vote when Senate President Vicente Sotto III was removed from his position by a majority of senators. Sotto had previously promised to move quickly with Duterte’s impeachment trial. The sudden leadership change created uncertainty over how and when the Senate proceedings against the vice president would continue.

At the same time, another dramatic political development unfolded inside the Senate involving Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Dela Rosa unexpectedly appeared in the Senate after months away from public view. Investigators from the National Bureau of Investigation reportedly attempted to detain him after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant accusing him of crimes against humanity connected to anti-drug killings carried out during Duterte’s presidency.

The ICC stated that the charges involve the alleged murder of at least 32 people between 2016 and 2018 while dela Rosa served as national police chief. Former President Rodrigo Duterte is already facing trial in the Netherlands over similar allegations linked to his anti-drug campaign, which resulted in thousands of deaths. Philippine authorities are also conducting separate investigations into the role of police officials during the controversial operations.

Sara Duterte has repeatedly rejected allegations of corruption and criminal misconduct. Her lawyers argued that the impeachment process is politically motivated and insisted prosecutors must prove all accusations during the Senate trial. Duterte has also accused President Marcos and his allies of trying to weaken her politically because of speculation that she plans to run for president in 2028 after Marcos completes his term.

The impeachment complaints also referenced remarks made by Duterte during an online news conference in 2024, where she warned that an assassin would target President Marcos, his wife and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she herself were harmed. The vice president later clarified that she was expressing concern for her own safety rather than issuing a direct threat. Despite the controversy, independent surveys continue to show that Sara Duterte remains one of the country’s most popular political figures. Analysts believe the impeachment battle could further deepen political divisions in the Philippines and reshape the country’s political landscape ahead of future national elections.
