SC Dismisses WFI Appeal in Vinesh Phogat Case

SC Dismisses WFI Appeal in Vinesh Phogat Case

Post by : Shakul

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by the Wrestling Federation of India against a Delhi High Court order that allowed wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games. The ruling effectively brings the legal dispute to a close after the completion of the selection process.

A bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Aravind Kumar observed that the appeal had become infructuous because the selection trials had already taken place. Since the event in question was completed and the athlete had participated, the court found no practical reason to continue hearing the matter.

The dispute originated after the Delhi High Court permitted Vinesh Phogat to compete in the Asian Games selection trials despite objections raised by the Wrestling Federation of India. The federation subsequently challenged the order before the Supreme Court, seeking legal intervention regarding the eligibility decision.

During its ruling, the apex court clarified that its decision to dismiss the appeal should not be interpreted as approval of the critical observations made by the Delhi High Court against the federation. The judges specifically noted that the dismissal was based on the matter becoming irrelevant after the conclusion of the trials.

Vinesh Phogat participated in the selection event following the High Court's order. However, she was unable to secure qualification through the trials, having lost during the competition. As a result, the central issue raised in the appeal had already been overtaken by subsequent events.

The judgment highlights the principle that courts generally avoid deciding disputes that no longer have a live controversy or practical consequence. Legal experts noted that once the trials were completed and the results finalized, the appeal lost much of its significance from a judicial perspective.

The case had attracted considerable attention within India's sporting community because of the ongoing debates surrounding wrestling administration and athlete participation in national selection processes. While the Supreme Court's decision ends this particular legal challenge, discussions regarding governance and transparency within Indian wrestling are likely to continue.
