A tragic accident in Seoul claimed the lives of three people and injured three others after a decades-old overpass undergoing demolition partially collapsed on Tuesday. Emergency officials confirmed that the incident occurred during a safety inspection at the demolition site, triggering a large rescue and emergency response operation in the South Korean capital.
According to local fire authorities, workers had temporarily stopped demolition work after noticing that part of the aging structure had slightly sunk while crews were cutting concrete slabs. Officials stated that a sudden collapse of a bridge deck section caused heavy debris, concrete, and steel materials to fall onto workers positioned below the structure.
Fire officials said the victims were trapped and crushed beneath the wreckage when the overpass unexpectedly gave way. Rescue teams rushed to the scene immediately after the collapse and worked for several hours to remove debris and search for additional victims. The injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
Authorities quickly sealed off roads and surrounding areas near the accident site to prevent further danger. Images from the scene showed twisted steel beams, broken concrete slabs, and damaged sections of the bridge hanging dangerously over nearby streets. Police and safety personnel established a restricted zone as structural engineers assessed the stability of the remaining structure.
The collapse also disrupted railway operations in the area after debris reportedly fell onto a nearby rail line. Korea Railroad Corporation temporarily suspended several train services connected to Seoul Station while cleanup and safety inspections were carried out. Transportation authorities later began efforts to restore normal rail operations.
Officials confirmed that the overpass was originally built in 1966 and had recently been classified as structurally unsafe due to aging concerns. Demolition work had reportedly been ongoing since August last year as part of a broader infrastructure safety and redevelopment project initiated by city authorities.
Investigators have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the collapse and whether safety protocols were properly followed during demolition activities. Authorities are expected to examine engineering assessments, worksite procedures, and equipment conditions as part of the investigation into the fatal incident.
The tragedy has once again raised public concerns in South Korea regarding aging infrastructure and construction site safety standards. Experts have warned that many older bridges and urban structures across the country may require urgent inspections and modernization to prevent similar accidents in the future.
