Serena Williams has decisively quashed rumors regarding a potential return to professional tennis, following her name's unexpected inclusion in the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) anti-doping testing pool. Williams, who last stepped onto the court during the 2022 US Open, has been absent from the sport for over two years.
According to ITIA regulations, any athlete listed in the testing pool is required to provide daily whereabouts information and remain accessible for random testing. This listing drew significant attention on social media, prompting many fans to speculate that the 44-year-old legend may be contemplating a comeback.
In response to the ongoing chatter, Williams took to X to clarify her stance, stating:
“Omg y’all I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”
The circumstances of her name reappearing in the testing pool have raised questions, although her representatives have not provided any clarification. As per ITIA policy, retired players wishing to compete again must undergo at least six months of out-of-competition testing before being eligible for tournaments.
The debate surrounding her potential return intensified last week after Williams shared images of herself on a tennis court with her younger daughter, Adira River, born in August 2023. This sparked excitement within the tennis community, with many fans still hoping for her return to competitive play.
Serena officially announced her retirement from tennis in 2022, expressing a desire to focus on her family and new ventures, stating she was "evolving away from the sport." With an impressive tally of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she stands as the most decorated female player in the Open Era. Although she sought a historic 24th title to equal Margaret Court's all-time record, her journey after giving birth to her first daughter, Olympia, in 2017 included reaching four Grand Slam finals without securing another championship.
Despite persistent hopes from fans, Williams has made it abundantly clear that a return to the court is not on her agenda, effectively dismissing the latest round of comeback speculations.
