Mexican racing star Sergio Perez has embarked on a pivotal journey as he gears up to compete for Cadillac, marking the team’s entry into Formula 1 in 2026. Following a challenging conclusion to his tenure with Red Bull, Perez stepped back from racing in late 2024, despite two remaining years on his contract. This break allowed him to reconnect with family and reevaluate his career aspirations. Ultimately, he decided to rejoin the sport with Cadillac, a new contender on the F1 stage.
As a fresh team, Cadillac lacks an established Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) program. To address this, they collaborated with Ferrari, enabling Perez to test a two-year-old Ferrari car to regain his pace and reacquaint himself with F1 dynamics. This symbiotic relationship is beneficial for both; Ferrari’s seasoned TPC crew manages the car while Cadillac's engineers gain insights through Perez's test runs. This collaboration enhances Cadillac's simulation models using real-world data from these trials.
Last week, Perez conducted his seat fitting at Ferrari’s Maranello facility. He proceeded to a two-day testing session at the Imola circuit, driving a Ferrari in a sleek black design, complete with a matching race suit and helmet. The objective of this test is fundamental yet crucial: to refresh his familiarity with F1 vehicles, revisit race protocols, and assess his fitness level as he prepares for pre-season testing in Cadillac’s inaugural F1 car come January.
Before stepping into the car, Perez expressed his enthusiasm, emphasizing that the timing of this test serves as an excellent benchmark for his winter training. His goal is to evaluate any fitness declines he may have experienced during his hiatus and pinpoint areas requiring enhancement. He aims to return to optimal racing weight and condition, hoping these two days provide clarity on necessary improvements before the forthcoming season.
This test also signifies the beginning of Perez's practical engagement with Cadillac. He highlighted the importance of establishing solid communication with engineers and mechanics; a successful partnership requires the driver and team to “speak the same language.” Since signing in the summer, Perez has visited Cadillac's facilities in both the UK and the US, completing numerous simulator sessions to familiarize himself with new car designs and 2026 regulations.
During his recent tour of Cadillac’s facility in Silverstone, Perez inspected the first Formula 1 monocoque, crafted under the new regulations set for 2026, including modifications to aerodynamics and power unit structures. Perez's extensive experience, having raced for prominent teams such as Sauber, McLaren, Force India, and Red Bull, is viewed as immensely beneficial to Cadillac as they refine their development strategies.
Post-Imola, Perez is set to continue with simulator sessions, attend engineering discussions, and prioritize his winter fitness regimen. His aim is to arrive at January testing fully prepared, both mentally and physically. For the 2026 season, Perez will partner with Valtteri Bottas, a seasoned competitor joining from Mercedes as a reserve. Together, they bring an impressive 527 Grand Prix starts to Cadillac’s new venture, with Bottas participating in track activities once his Mercedes obligations conclude.
Sergio Perez's transition to Cadillac symbolizes a new beginning. It offers the Mexican driver a chance to reset his career while helping to establish a brand-new Formula 1 team from scratch. For Cadillac, Perez’s expertise will be invaluable as they gear up for their debut race in 2026. The early testing phases, simulator interactions, and team synergy demonstrate Cadillac's commitment to entering Formula 1 with competitiveness. As the countdown to 2026 progresses, both Perez and Cadillac are concentrated on learning, refining, and laying a robust groundwork for future success.
