A major fire at Seri Kembangan Wholesale Market in Selangor, Malaysia, caused multiple explosions after around 2,000 methane gas canisters caught fire. The massive blaze broke out on Thursday night, creating thick smoke and flames that could be seen from several kilometres away.
Firefighters worked for hours to control the fire and stop it from spreading to the main market building, which contains important sections for fish, vegetables and meat supplies. No casualties were reported, but firefighting operations continued as authorities investigated the cause of the incident.
The fire reportedly started at around 10:50 pm at the Selangor Wholesale Market in Seri Kembangan. Strong winds helped the flames spread quickly, increasing the intensity of the fire.
Witnesses reported hearing several loud explosions as methane gas canisters stored at the location caught fire. The presence of nearly 2,000 gas canisters made the situation more dangerous for emergency teams responding to the blaze.
The thick smoke and bright flames were visible from nearly three kilometres away, causing concern among nearby residents and businesses.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) faced additional challenges during the operation due to problems with nearby fire hydrants.
According to officials, five fire hydrants near the location could not be used because they were managed by private parties. As a result, firefighters had to depend on water supplies from fire engines and tanker trucks to fight the flames.
Despite the difficulties, emergency teams continued their efforts and successfully prevented the fire from reaching the main market building.
A major rescue operation was launched after the fire broke out. Around 68 firefighters from JBPM and 67 Fire Volunteer members were sent to the scene.
The operation involved 19 emergency vehicles from 15 Fire and Rescue Stations across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Firefighters managed to control the blaze by around 1:20 am.
Officials said several nearby buildings were affected by the fire, but the main market area was protected because firefighters successfully stopped the flames from spreading.
The burning area was located only about 50 metres away from the main market building. The building houses important sections, including fish, vegetable and meat areas that support local food supplies.
Firefighters focused their efforts on creating a safety barrier and preventing the fire from reaching these critical sections.
Authorities confirmed that while some nearby premises were affected, the main market structure was saved from major damage.
No deaths or injuries have been reported following the Seri Kembangan Wholesale Market fire. However, firefighters continued cooling and extinguishing operations at three storage areas behind the site.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the total financial losses caused by the incident.
Officials said further details will be released after the investigation is completed.
