On Thursday evening, Seton Hall outplayed Monmouth with a 70-58 scoreline during a nonconference clash in Newark, New Jersey. After trailing at halftime by seven points, the Pirates mounted a significant comeback in the second half. Their enhanced defensive strategies and shooting accuracy were central to their success.
TJ Simpkins was the standout for Seton Hall, contributing 14 points, including a pivotal three-pointer that secured the lead for the Pirates with 15:41 remaining in the game. His teammates also stepped up, providing crucial points and impactful defensive efforts to change the course of the match.
Both A.J. Staton-McCray and Adam Clark scored 13 points each, helping sustain a strong offensive flow for the team. Monmouth's Stefanos Spartalis led their scoring with 16 points but could not prevent Seton Hall from seizing control in the latter half. The Pirates improved their season record to 4-0 following this victory.
In a stifling display of defense, Seton Hall allowed Monmouth to make only four field goals after halftime, completely shifting the game's momentum. With an impressive tally of 13 steals and 10 blocked shots, including seven by Hines, the defensive effort was critical in halting Monmouth's scoring prospects.
After a challenging first half, where Monmouth initially held a seven-point lead, Seton Hall quickly reversed the tide. Within the opening 90 seconds of the second half, Elijah Fisher's layup, a three-pointer from Mike Williams, and two free throws by Staton-McCray highlighted a swift 7-0 run. From there, the Pirates never looked back.
Monmouth attempted to remain competitive, as Dok Muordar closed the gap to 42-38 with a dunk at the 12:48 mark. However, the Hawks did not hit another field goal until Jason Rivera-Torres scored a three-pointer with just 2:53 left, by which time Seton Hall had extended their lead to 15 points, cruising to an unchallenged victory.
The initial half had its share of competitive moments, with both squads finding scoring difficult. Monmouth's Jason Rivera-Torres initiated the scoring with a dunk 2:44 into the game, but Seton Hall quickly answered with an 8-0 run spearheaded by consecutive three-pointers from Staton-McCray, allowing the team to surge ahead 17-13. Monmouth countered with their own 8-0 streak to keep the match tight.
During the first half, Seton Hall faced a 1-for-9 shooting slump while Monmouth capitalized on their opportunities, extending their lead to 31-22 with a quick 7-0 run. Nevertheless, the Pirates regrouped, showcasing strong defensive skills and equitable scoring to dominate the second half and clinch a decisive win.
