One of Bollywood’s most loved actors, Shah Rukh Khan, once shared his honest feelings about a moment that fans have often debated — the National Film Awards of 2005. That year, Saif Ali Khan won the Best Actor award for his romantic comedy Hum Tum. But many people, including Shah Rukh himself, believed that his powerful performance in Swades deserved the honour instead.
A Heartfelt Performance in 'Swades'
Swades, released in 2004, was a film that touched many hearts. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the movie featured Shah Rukh Khan in the role of Mohan Bhargava, an Indian scientist working at NASA who returns to his village in India. The film talked about issues like rural development, brain drain, and the importance of giving back to one’s roots.
Shah Rukh’s role in Swades was different from his usual romantic or action-packed characters. He played a thoughtful, serious, and realistic man trying to make a difference in the lives of ordinary people. His acting was praised by both critics and audiences for being mature, honest, and deeply emotional.
The 2005 National Awards and SRK’s Disappointment
When the National Film Awards were announced in 2005, many expected Shah Rukh Khan to win Best Actor for Swades. However, the award went to Saif Ali Khan for Hum Tum, a romantic comedy directed by Kunal Kohli. Saif played the role of a fun-loving cartoonist in a light-hearted story of love and relationships.
After the results were declared, Shah Rukh Khan shared in an interview that he felt he should have won the award that year. “I thought I should have got it for Swades. I was very proud of that film. Maybe people didn’t understand it back then,” he said honestly.
He didn’t speak out of anger or jealousy but from a place of belief in the hard work he had put into the role. He also added that while awards are important, they are not everything. What matters more is how deeply a film touches people’s hearts — and Swades certainly did that.
Fans Have Always Agreed with SRK
Shah Rukh Khan’s fans have long believed that his performance in Swades was one of his best. Even years after the film’s release, people still talk about how emotionally powerful the movie was. Social media is full of clips from Swades, and many users post about how the film changed the way they looked at their own country and responsibilities.
Some fans even say that Shah Rukh played the role so well, it didn’t feel like acting at all. Instead of being the “King of Romance,” in Swades, he became a common man with a big heart and a mission to help others.
Saif Ali Khan's Take
Saif Ali Khan, who won the award for Hum Tum, was also surprised by the recognition. At the time, he was still building his career and was not known for serious roles. Winning the National Award gave him confidence and helped his career grow. However, even Saif has said in interviews that he respects Shah Rukh Khan and considers him one of the finest actors in Indian cinema.
There has never been any public fight between the two actors. They have always spoken politely about each other and remained friendly within the industry.
The Bigger Picture: Are Awards Always Fair?
The discussion around this award opened up a bigger debate — are award shows always fair? Many actors and fans feel that sometimes good performances are ignored, while lighter films or more popular faces get the prize. This has led to questions about how awards are judged and whether more serious or meaningful films get enough attention.
Even Shah Rukh Khan once said, “Sometimes, you don’t win because your film doesn’t fit the mood of the year. That’s fine. What matters is that people remember the film.”
Swades: A Film That Aged Beautifully
Over time, Swades has become more than just a film. It is now seen as one of the best movies ever made in Bollywood. Schools, colleges, and NGOs have used scenes from the film to talk about real-world problems. The music, the message, and the story still touch people — and Shah Rukh’s role as Mohan Bhargava continues to inspire.
The film didn’t make huge money at the box office when it was first released. But it slowly became a cult classic — loved by people of all ages, especially those living abroad who felt connected to its message of home and identity.
A Voice of Honesty and Reflection
Shah Rukh Khan’s admission that he deserved the award for Swades is not about ego. It’s a rare moment when a superstar shares his true feelings about his work and the recognition it did or didn’t receive. His honesty touched many fans, and his words reminded everyone that artists also need appreciation and fairness.
