In light of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka commencing Tuesday in Rawalpindi, Pakistan's new ODI captain Shaheen Afridi has delivered a compelling message to his teammates. Speaking through the International Cricket Council (ICC), Afridi emphasized the need to sustain the momentum established from their recent 2-1 series victory over South Africa. This series marks Pakistan's second significant 50-over challenge following a disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Afridi regarded the series win in Faisalabad against South Africa as a vital morale booster for the squad. “The triumph in Faisalabad instilled great confidence in us. It was my inaugural series as ODI captain, and I was deeply proud of how the players navigated various situations and collaborated effectively as a team,” Afridi articulated. He commended his team’s energy, intent, and cooperative spirit, noting the strong bond demonstrated throughout the series.
The left-arm pacer highlighted that the prime objective for Pakistan now is achieving consistency in their performance. “Heading into the Sri Lanka series, our goal is to carry this winning streak forward. We seek to develop consistency in our play and ensure improvement across all facets of our game,” he remarked. Afridi underscored the significance of having stability in batting, bowling, and fielding, essential for Pakistan to evolve as a robust ODI team.
Afridi acknowledged the disciplined play and skillful cricket displayed by Sri Lanka. “Sri Lanka is a disciplined team that consistently tests your skills. We must play intelligently, adhere to our strategies, and maintain a positive mindset,” he commented. The focus will now be on executing plans accurately, analyzing match situations keenly, and remaining composed during critical moments. He reminded his team to leverage home advantage wisely without underestimating their rivals.
Moreover, Afridi stated that in modern cricket, success is predicated on teamwork, rather than isolated brilliance. “Every player should take ownership. It’s not solely the responsibility of Shaheen, Fakhar (Zaman), Babar (Azam), or Saim’s (Ayub); we all need to contribute our best,” he insisted. He emphasized the necessity for players to support one another, especially when certain individuals are struggling, as a positive locker room environment fosters collective confidence and cohesion. “We must back those who seem out of form and always believe in our ability to perform as a unit,” he affirmed emphatically.
The overarching goal, Afridi revealed, is for the team to produce performances that resonate with their fans' pride. “We aim to continue evolving as a team and provide our fans with performances they can cherish,” he stated. Afridi is confident that Pakistan’s ODI squad possesses the talent and potential to rank among the elite teams globally, provided they remain united and disciplined.
The squad selected for the three-match ODI series presents a well-balanced mix of youth and experience. Included in the team are Shaheen Afridi (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Faisal Akram, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Jr., Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, and Salman Ali Agha.
This selection highlights Pakistan’s commitment to nurturing a varied ensemble capable of excelling under diverse conditions. With the ODI series set to kick off in Rawalpindi, Pakistan is eager to uphold its winning momentum and enhance its roster ahead of upcoming international contests.
Shaheen Afridi’s leadership signals a new era for Pakistan’s 50-over cricket. His capacity to inspire and unify the team has already borne fruit, and the impending series against Sri Lanka represents another chance to bolster confidence. Fans nationwide will be keeping a close watch as the Men in Green aim to further their winning streak and progress towards a more dependable and competitive ODI future.
