In a groundbreaking achievement, Sharjah has wrapped up its historic role as the inaugural Arab Guest of Honour at the Warsaw International Book Fair, underscoring a notable milestone in the cultural partnership between Poland and the UAE.
For four days, Sharjah showcased a vibrant array of Emirati and Arab literature, culture, and traditions, engaging Polish audiences and enhancing mutual appreciation through various events. This effort aligns with His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi's vision, which aims to position Sharjah as a global hub for culture and knowledge.
The emirate’s outreach extended beyond the fairgrounds at Warsaw’s National Stadium to various educational and cultural venues across the capital. This citywide initiative emphasized the importance of cultural dialogue and connection between Emirati and Polish communities.
Featuring 35 cultural events, the program brought together 36 creators, including writers and artists from both the UAE and Poland, facilitated by 21 cultural institutions to ensure a lively exchange.
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, led the delegation, highlighting Sharjah's growing prominence on the world cultural stage.
According to Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, the participation underscores the Ruler of Sharjah’s commitment to using culture as a cornerstone for development and community understanding.
He acknowledged that Sheikha Bodour is carrying forward this vision, further solidifying Sharjah’s role in fostering international cultural connections while expanding the global footprint of Emirati and Arab culture.
The considerable visitor engagement at the Sharjah pavilion illustrated culture's power as a bridge between people. He noted that Polish audiences showed significant enthusiasm toward Emirati and Arab literary works, arts, and cultural offerings.
Sharjah’s presence at this prestigious international event not only represented the UAE but also highlighted the richness and diversity of Arab culture, paving new paths for collaboration in publishing, rights exchanges, and broader literary efforts.
Jacek Oryl, Director of the Warsaw International Book Fair, praised Sharjah’s engagement as exceptional, crediting it for making this year's event memorable and outstanding.
He commended Sharjah for crafting a comprehensive cultural agenda that extended past the traditional book fair scope, covering diverse facets such as literature, arts, and academic exchanges.
Oryl noted that this initiative has greatly benefitted Polish audiences by deepening their understanding of Emirati and Arab culture, fostering newfound avenues for dialogue and cooperation.
The fair featured talks with Emirati and Polish creatives, covering subjects like storytelling, memory, and children’s literature, illustrating how local narratives resonate across borders.
Special programs held at the University of Warsaw engaged academic communities, focusing on the UAE’s cultural landscape—including poetry, theatre, and visual arts—providing meaningful insights into contemporary Emirati creativity.
Art took center stage with a collaborative exhibition uniting Emirati and Polish artists, fostering a mutual cultural dialogue inspired by poetry and visual art.
Visitors also immersed themselves in Emirati heritage through performances by the Sharjah National Band and experiences showcasing traditional crafts like Talli embroidery and dressmaking.
The event enhanced professional ties in the publishing industry as Emirati and Polish publishers explored opportunities for translation and partnership. The Sharjah pavilion featured six Arabic books translated into Polish, marking a vital step in promoting cultural understanding.
Sharjah’s pavilion garnered enthusiastic public interest, with 280 books sold, reflecting a deepening appreciation among Polish readers for Emirati culture and literature.
This successful participation reinforces Sharjah’s role as a leading global cultural hub, committed to bridging cultures through literature, art, and knowledge.
