On Friday night, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan engaged in distinct phone discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, aiming to reinvigorate the stalled US-Iran peace talks.
In both dialogues, Sharif voiced significant concern regarding the recent escalation of tensions in the region, pressing all involved parties to avoid actions that might jeopardize the ongoing diplomatic negotiations. He underlined the necessity of safeguarding the achievements made under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), established to foster peace and stability.
During his conversation with President Pezeshkian, Sharif highlighted the urgent need for restoring peace and stability in the region, as reported by Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office.
He urged all factions to act with restraint and avoid any measures that could disrupt the peace that has been cultivated in recent months. Emphasizing the significance of adhering to the commitments under the Islamabad MoU, Sharif characterized it as a long-lasting framework designed to promote understanding, respect, and shared prosperity.
Reiterating Pakistan's dedication to fostering regional peace, Sharif affirmed that Islamabad is ready to continue its role in facilitating dialogue and ensuring stability.
President Pezeshkian expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and senior Pakistani officials for participating in the memorial service for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
He also appreciated Pakistan's constructive role in stabilizing the region and reaffirmed Iran's commitment to peace.
Both leaders reviewed the progress on decisions from Pezeshkian’s recent visit to Islamabad and agreed to expedite follow-up measures to enhance cooperation bilaterally. They committed to staying in close contact and continuing consultations regarding regional peace and mutual interests.
In a separate call, Sharif conversed with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, again expressing concern over the recent surge in regional tensions.
He extended Pakistan's solidarity with the people of Qatar following recent assaults and emphasized that all parties need to show restraint and avoid actions that could disrupt regional peace.
Sharif also conveyed appreciation to the Qatari leader for supporting the diplomatic endeavors leading to the Islamabad MoU and the initial high-level technical discussions conducted in Burgenstock.
Both leaders concurred that ongoing diplomacy and continued dialogue are vital. They reaffirmed the necessity for all parties to honor their commitments according to the peace memorandum.
The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the United States and Iran on June 18, aiming to restore peace in West Asia. Technical-level discussions occurred in Switzerland on June 21, with Pakistan and Qatar mediating the process.
Sharif's recent conversations with the Iranian and Qatari leaders represent a continuation of diplomatic efforts to ensure the peace process remains viable and to support regional stability.
