Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer is expected to miss the forthcoming One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa. Known for his vital contributions in the recent Champions Trophy 2025, Iyer is currently recovering from an internal injury that occurred during the third ODI against Australia. Officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suggest that the team's management is prioritizing his health over a hasty return to play.
The injury transpired on October 25 during the third ODI in Sydney, when Iyer made a daring dive to catch Australian player Alex Carey off the bowling of Harshit Rana. In the process, he landed awkwardly on his left side, leading to immediate discomfort. Initial assessments indicated a minor injury, but scans later revealed a laceration of the spleen along with internal bleeding, marking the injury as more severe than first anticipated.
Post-incident, India's team physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain and medical personnel rushed to assist Iyer. He was swiftly taken off the field and admitted to a nearby hospital for careful evaluation, where doctors confirmed the internal trauma with special focus on the spleen. To ensure proper monitoring, Iyer was initially placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a few days. Thankfully, after showing progress, he was discharged and has been recovering under medical supervision since.
According to a report from The Indian Express, the BCCI and selectors are being discreet about Iyer's potential return. A source mentioned that while he is improving, he is not yet deemed match fit for the high-pressure ODI series against South Africa starting on November 30. “His recovery requires more time, and both the board and the selection committee are avoiding any rush following his injury. His participation in the South Africa ODI series is doubtful,” the source confirmed.
Iyer is seen as a key player in India’s middle order. His skill in stabilizing innings has been instrumental to the team's achievements in vital tournaments. During this year's Champions Trophy, Iyer emerged as a prominent player, consistently achieving runs when needed. His absence in the series against South Africa could create a significant void in India's batting order.
The India vs South Africa ODI series is scheduled to commence on November 30, with matches planned in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam. In light of Iyer's unavailability, selectors may consider alternatives such as Rajat Patidar, Tilak Varma, or Rinku Singh to cover the middle-order gap. This series is crucial for India's preparation for upcoming international commitments, and management aims to keep the team’s momentum intact despite Iyer's absence.
Sources reiterated the medical team's focus on Iyer returning only when he is completely fit, as the spleen injury requires careful handling to prevent long-term complications. Doctors have advised him to avoid intense physical activities for the immediate future. Meanwhile, Iyer is engaging in light fitness exercises and physiotherapy as he gradually works towards regaining full fitness.
Support for Iyer has poured in from teammates and fans on social media, who wish him a swift recovery. The Indian cricket community understands his significant role in keeping the team balanced and stable. With major tournaments such as the Asia Cup and World Test Championship ahead in 2026, Iyer’s complete recovery is crucial for India’s future endeavors.
Currently, it seems that Shreyas Iyer’s participation in the ODI series against South Africa is quite unlikely. The selectors plan to finalize their decision closer to the series' start, based on Iyer’s medical progress. At this point, his health and long-term career take precedence, as his absence may impact the short term, but a full recovery will greatly benefit both him and Indian cricket going forward.
