India's ODI deputy captain Shreyas Iyer is receiving intensive care in a Sydney hospital after scans revealed internal bleeding linked to a rib cage injury. The damage occurred during the third ODI against Australia when Iyer ran back and plucked a match-turning catch to dismiss Alex Carey — a moment of brilliance that had serious consequences.
Sources say Iyer reported sharp pain after returning to the dressing room and his vital signs became unstable, prompting the BCCI medical team to expedite his transfer to hospital. Medical imaging confirmed internal bleeding and he was placed in the ICU for close observation. Team and hospital doctors warned the situation "could have been life-threatening" if not identified and treated promptly.
A team insider told reporters that Iyer has been in intensive care for several days. "The medical staff acted immediately when the bleeding was detected. He's stable now, but it was a grave scare. He's resilient and expected to recover," the source said. The BCCI's medical unit remains in regular contact with Sydney clinicians to coordinate his care.
Earlier estimates had suggested a recovery window of about three weeks, but clinicians now caution that the healing period may extend, given the severity of the internal injury. Return to competitive cricket will depend on his full recovery and medical clearance.
It is reported Iyer will stay under observation in Sydney for at least a week before being considered fit to travel back to India. He is not part of the present T20 squad, which allows him time to focus entirely on recuperation. Supporters around the world have flooded social media with messages wishing him a swift recovery.
The incident has resonated across the cricket community, a reminder of the physical risks players accept in pursuit of success. For now, Shreyas Iyer’s priority is recovery, and the sport watches and waits for positive news.
