Indonesia School Collapse 1 Dead, 65 Students Feared Buried in Rubble

Indonesia School Collapse 1 Dead, 65 Students Feared Buried in Rubble

Post by : Raman

A tragic building collapse at an Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, has left at least one student dead, 99 injured, and 65 feared buried under rubble. The incident occurred during an afternoon prayer session in a building that was undergoing unauthorized expansion.

Rescuers, including police, soldiers, and search teams, worked through the night to free students trapped under heavy concrete slabs. Eight survivors were rescued more than eight hours after the collapse, some weak and seriously injured. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as additional bodies were spotted under the debris.

Families of the students gathered at hospitals and near the collapsed school, anxiously waiting for news. Many parents cried out for their children, pleading with rescuers to find them quickly. “Oh my God… my son is still buried, please help!” one mother screamed, reflecting the anguish of dozens of relatives.

Search and rescue teams faced difficult conditions, with unstable parts of the building making it dangerous to use heavy equipment. Oxygen and water were provided to those trapped under the rubble while teams worked to extract survivors safely.

The students affected were mainly boys aged 12 to 17, studying in grades seven to eleven. Female students were in another part of the building during the collapse and managed to escape without injury. Injured students were rushed to hospitals, with some in critical condition.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse. Provincial police spokesperson Jules Abraham Abast said the old two-story prayer hall could not support the additional floors being added without proper permits. “The old building’s foundation was apparently unable to support two more floors of concrete and collapsed during the pouring process,” Abast explained.

This tragic accident highlights ongoing concerns over building safety and unregulated construction in educational institutions across the region. Rescue operations are ongoing, with hundreds of personnel involved in life-saving efforts.
