In Singapore, the second practice session of the Formula 1 Grand Prix was full of drama as championship leader Oscar Piastri steered McLaren to the fastest lap on a chaotic track marked by multiple accidents.
The session began with George Russell crashing his Mercedes into a wall, scattering debris and causing an extended red flag delay. Shortly after, Liam Lawson also hit the wall in his Racing Bulls car and struggled back to the pits on three wheels.
Chaos continued in the pit lane when Lando Norris tried to rejoin the track and collided with Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari. Ferrari was fined $10,000 for an unsafe release during the incident.
Despite the turmoil, Piastri set the fastest lap at 1:30.714, bouncing back after a disappointing Azerbaijan race. “It’s been a good start. The pace was solid, and I learned a lot today,” said the Australian driver.
Isack Hadjar impressed with the second fastest lap at 1:30.846, followed closely by reigning champion Max Verstappen at 1:30.857, keeping his championship hopes alive despite trailing Piastri by 69 points.
Fernando Alonso, who led the first practice, remained competitive with fourth place at 1:30.877, just ahead of Lando Norris. Lance Stroll of Aston Martin secured sixth, completing a strong Friday performance.
Carlos Sainz, the Singapore 2023 winner, finished eighth, ahead of Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, while Alex Albon recovered from a morning brake fire to take 13th fastest.
Mercedes struggled after Russell’s crash, completing only six laps, and teammate Kimi Antonelli managed 18th. “It was a bit of a weird one… better today than tomorrow,” Russell commented.
Moderate track temperatures allowed drivers to push limits despite FIA heat hazard regulations. Friday’s practice session set the stage for an unpredictable Singapore GP, highlighting the balance between safety and speed.
