Singapore Launches Cyber Command to Fight Online Scams

Singapore Launches Cyber Command to Fight Online Scams

Post by : Shakul

Singapore has launched a dedicated Cyber Command to strengthen its fight against online scams and cybercrime, bringing together all major cyber security and anti-scam operations under one specialised unit. The new initiative aims to detect, disrupt and prevent digital fraud before criminals can target victims.

Authorities said the Cyber Command will play a key role in identifying fraudulent websites, fake online identities, scam networks and suspicious financial accounts. The move comes as cybercriminals increasingly use artificial intelligence and advanced digital tools to carry out sophisticated online scams.

National Scams List to Block Fraud Before It Happens

One of the Cyber Command's most important initiatives is the National Scams List, a central database containing bank accounts, phone numbers and online identities linked to fraudulent activities. Financial institutions will use this information to identify suspicious transactions and prevent scam-related accounts from operating.

Officials said the system has already helped banks stop fraudulent accounts before they could be used to cheat victims, making it a proactive tool instead of simply responding after scams occur.

New Unit to Tackle Growing Digital Threats

The Cyber Command will also oversee Singapore's Digital Disruption Centre, which monitors various online threats including ransomware attacks, phishing campaigns, malicious websites and harmful online content that could threaten public safety.

Authorities noted that cybercriminals are constantly changing their methods, making it necessary for law enforcement agencies to adopt faster technology and intelligence-driven investigations.

Cryptocurrency Under Greater Surveillance

Officials revealed that cryptocurrency has become an increasingly common method for criminals to move and hide illegally obtained money. As a result, the Cyber Command will significantly expand its team of cryptocurrency tracing specialists.

These experts will work to monitor blockchain transactions, trace digital assets connected to scam operations and support investigations involving international cybercrime syndicates.

Singapore Expands Cybercrime Workforce

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the Cyber Command will begin operations with approximately 200 officers. The workforce is expected to grow to more than 400 personnel as cyber threats continue evolving.

Authorities believe the larger workforce will improve response times, strengthen digital investigations and enhance cooperation with banks, technology companies and international law enforcement agencies.

Online Scam Losses Continue to Rise

Online scams have remained one of Singapore's biggest public safety concerns over the past several years. Since 2019, thousands of scam cases have been reported annually, resulting in financial losses amounting to hundreds of millions of Singapore dollars.

Officials hope the new Cyber Command will significantly reduce scam cases by disrupting criminal operations before they can reach members of the public.

Why did Singapore launch a Cyber Command?

Singapore established the Cyber Command to strengthen its ability to combat rapidly growing online scams, cybercrime and digital fraud. By bringing anti-scam investigations, cyber intelligence and digital security capabilities under one organisation, authorities aim to detect criminal activities earlier and prevent financial losses before scams occur.

What is the National Scams List?

The National Scams List is a central database containing bank accounts, mobile numbers and online identities that have been linked to scam activities. Financial institutions receive this information to block suspicious accounts, identify fraudulent transactions and stop criminals from using the banking system to target new victims.

How will the Cyber Command improve cyber security?

The new unit will identify scam websites, dismantle criminal networks, investigate ransomware attacks, monitor harmful online content and expand cryptocurrency investigations. Officials believe these combined efforts will improve Singapore's overall cyber resilience and reduce the impact of digital crime.

Authorities Aim for Safer Digital Environment

Officials said the Cyber Command will continue working closely with banks, technology companies and international law enforcement partners to identify emerging cyber threats. Public awareness campaigns and improved digital monitoring are also expected to play a major role in reducing online scam incidents.

Authorities encouraged citizens to remain cautious when receiving unsolicited messages, verify online transactions carefully and report suspicious activities immediately to help combat cybercrime.
