A Singapore court has allowed a 29-year-old man to avoid a permanent criminal record after he admitted his involvement in a scheme that exploited a PayPal payment glitch to obtain laptops without valid payments.
Jonathan Wee Jianwei was sentenced to a 14-day Short Detention Order and ordered to complete 70 hours of community service. The sentence allows him to experience prison conditions without receiving a long-term criminal record.
PayPal Glitch Used To Obtain Laptops
According to court documents, the fraud scheme began in 2019. Participants used a PayPal system issue that caused payments for laptops to be refunded after purchases were made.
The group allegedly used the method to obtain laptops from technology companies including Lenovo and Microsoft. Authorities said laptops worth thousands of dollars were acquired through the scheme.
Accused Confessed To Police
The case took an unusual turn when Wee voluntarily approached the police and admitted his role in the fraud. Prosecutors said the offence may never have been discovered if he had not come forward.
His confession played a major role in the court's decision to impose a lighter sentence.
Losses Were Repaid
The court also noted that Wee compensated the affected companies and paid around S$20,000 to cover the losses.
As a result, Lenovo and Microsoft did not suffer any financial damage from the scheme.
Other Suspects Face Proceedings
Another accused person has already pleaded guilty, while the alleged mastermind of the operation is expected to appear in court next month.
Authorities continue to investigate the wider case and have warned against exploiting payment system vulnerabilities.
Court Chooses Rehabilitation Over Jail
Although the offence could have resulted in a prison sentence of up to three years, the court decided that rehabilitation was more appropriate because of Wee's confession, cooperation and repayment efforts.
The case highlights how taking responsibility and making restitution can influence sentencing decisions in exceptional circumstances.
