A court in Singapore has sentenced a 40 year old man to 13 weeks in jail after he was found guilty of repeatedly assaulting his elderly father and forcing him to sleep outside their home. The case has drawn attention due to the prolonged abuse suffered by the victim.
The accused, Bennie Lee Wei Ming, admitted to multiple charges of assault against his 74 year old father. Prosecutors told the court that the abuse had been ongoing for several months before the incidents that led to his arrest.
During this period, the man frequently locked his father out of their apartment, leaving him with no choice but to spend nights at the void deck of the housing block. The elderly victim was only allowed back into the flat under certain conditions set by his son.
The court heard that the situation escalated when the accused physically attacked his father after a dispute. He reportedly kicked and punched the victim during one incident and later repeated the assault when his demands were not met.
In addition to the physical violence, the accused also issued threats, including a warning that the situation would not end peacefully. The elderly man was again denied entry into the home and forced to stay outside overnight.
The case also involved other family members, as the accused’s mother had earlier left the home due to the situation and was living elsewhere. Additional charges related to the use of force against her were considered during sentencing.
Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the offence, highlighting the vulnerability of elderly victims in such cases. The court’s decision reflects the legal system’s stance against domestic abuse and the need to protect individuals from harm within their own homes.
