A court in Singapore has sentenced a 33-year-old man to 19 months in jail for molesting a minor in a case that dates back more than a decade. The ruling highlights the seriousness of crimes involving minors and the importance of justice even after delayed reporting.
The accused, identified as Melvinder Singh Gurmit Singh, committed the offences when he was between 19 and 21 years old. The victim was a young child aged between seven and nine years at the time of the incidents, making the case particularly sensitive and serious.
During the trial, the accused denied the allegations and contested the charges. He claimed that the interaction was consensual and argued that the victim had made the accusations out of revenge. However, the court rejected these claims after reviewing the evidence presented.
The victim did not report the incidents immediately, stating that she feared she would not be believed. Over time, the impact of the abuse affected her emotionally and influenced her ability to form normal physical relationships, according to reports presented in court.
The case came to light in March 2023 when the victim shared her experience with her mother and partner, who encouraged her to approach the authorities. Following this, a police report was filed and an investigation was launched.
The prosecution argued that the accused had abused the trust placed in him by the victim’s family and sought a stricter sentence. The court ultimately sentenced him to 19 months in prison, slightly below the requested term.
The accused has stated that he plans to appeal against both the conviction and the sentence. Under Singapore law, such offences carry severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and corporal punishment, depending on the circumstances of the case.
