A Singapore court has jailed a hospital patient who attempted to seize a loaded revolver from an auxiliary police officer after becoming upset over being denied a nail clipper while receiving treatment at Changi General Hospital.
The incident took place on August 3, 2024, when 42-year-old Goh Chuan Chong, who was admitted as an inpatient at the hospital, repeatedly asked nursing staff for a nail clipper. His requests were denied on two separate occasions, leading to frustration and increasingly aggressive behavior.
As the situation escalated, hospital staff sought assistance from auxiliary police officers stationed at the facility. Two officers arrived at the ward and initially found Goh sitting calmly on his hospital bed. However, the situation changed suddenly when one officer approached him to talk.
According to court proceedings, Goh unexpectedly reached for the officer’s service revolver, which was secured in a holster at the officer’s waist. The firearm contained five live rounds at the time of the incident. The officer reacted quickly by pushing Goh’s hand away and stepping back, preventing the weapon from being removed.
Investigators later learned that Goh had allegedly attempted to take the revolver because he intended to use it to harm himself. The weapon remained secured inside the holster, preventing what authorities said could have become a far more serious tragedy.
Following the incident, Goh was arrested on August 4, 2024, and has remained in custody since then. During court proceedings, prosecutors acknowledged that his mental health condition should be taken into account as a mitigating factor, although further details about his condition were not publicly disclosed.
The case has drawn attention to security challenges within healthcare facilities and the importance of strict firearm safety measures. Authorities noted that the officer’s quick response and the secure holster design played a crucial role in preventing injuries and ensuring the safety of hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
