An unusual fraud case in Singapore has led to the jailing of an Italian man who attempted to scam a watch dealer, only to discover that the luxury timepiece he believed was fake was actually genuine. The case has drawn attention due to its rare and ironic circumstances.
The accused, Deepak Singh, was sentenced to seven months in jail after pleading guilty to attempting to cheat. The court ruled that his intention to deceive was enough to constitute a crime, even though the plan ultimately failed due to unexpected facts.
The incident began in early 2025 when Singh purchased a rare Rolex GMT Saru for around €55,000 along with a Cartier bracelet. Believing he had secured a valuable item, he initially planned to resell it for profit.
However, after being told by others that only a limited number of such watches exist, Singh began to suspect that the watch might be counterfeit. A watch shop further suggested that the case may have been altered, convincing him that he had been scammed.
Acting on this belief, Singh travelled to Singapore in November 2025 and attempted to sell the watch at a local shop. He offered it in exchange for three other Rolex models and even used a forged passport copy to conceal his identity during the transaction.
After the deal, the shop owner also suspected the watch was fake and reported the matter to the police. Singh attempted to flee Singapore but was arrested at Changi Airport before departure.
The case took a final twist when the watch was sent to an official Rolex service center, where experts confirmed that the watch was completely authentic. Despite no financial loss occurring, the court ruled that Singh’s deliberate attempt to cheat justified his conviction, highlighting the legal concept of an impossible crime.
