Singapore warns on baby pillow choking risk

Singapore warns on baby pillow choking risk

Post by : Shakul

Singapore authorities have issued a strong warning to parents and caregivers to immediately stop using self-feeding baby pillows, citing serious risks of choking and suffocation among infants. The alert was released by the Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO), highlighting growing concerns over products designed to allow babies to feed from bottles without supervision.

Officials explained that infants lack the physical ability and awareness required to safely manage feeding on their own. Babies cannot control the flow of milk, recognize when to stop, or respond effectively if they begin to choke or gag. This significantly increases the risk of life-threatening incidents.

Authorities also warned that the design of such pillows could lead to accidental suffocation if the baby shifts position, as well as other health complications including lung infections and ear infections caused by improper feeding posture.

The warning aligns with similar advisories issued in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, where child safety agencies have raised alarms over the use of bottle-propping devices. Pediatric experts globally recommend that infants should always be fed under direct adult supervision.

Caregivers have been strongly advised never to prop feeding bottles using pillows, blankets, or similar supports—even if marketed as safe products. Instead, babies should be held or placed in a semi-upright position during feeding, ensuring continuous monitoring.

The advisory reflects increasing global scrutiny of infant care products, emphasizing that convenience should never compromise a child’s safety.
