Singapore Tourist Dies During Bhutan Trek

Singapore Tourist Dies During Bhutan Trek

Post by : Shakul

A Singaporean tourist tragically lost her life after falling ill while descending from Bhutan’s iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of the country's most famous and spiritually significant landmarks. The incident occurred during a guided group tour and has shocked fellow travelers and tourism officials alike.

The 40-year-old woman was part of a 16-member tour group traveling under a Bhutan Smart Saver package organized by a Singapore-based travel agency. The group had arrived in Bhutan after departing Singapore on May 26 and was participating in scheduled sightseeing activities across the Himalayan kingdom.

According to tour officials, the woman began experiencing discomfort during the trek. Despite reportedly feeling unwell before reaching the monastery, she decided to continue the journey and successfully arrived at the sacred site, which is perched dramatically on a cliff more than 3,000 meters above sea level.

During the descent, her condition worsened and she informed the accompanying guide. Emergency assistance was immediately provided, with cardiopulmonary resuscitation being administered at the scene. A fellow traveler who was reportedly a doctor also joined efforts to help stabilize her condition while arrangements were made for urgent medical transport.

The woman was rushed to Paro Hospital for treatment. However, despite the efforts of rescuers and medical personnel, she could not be saved. Authorities have initiated standard medical procedures, including a post-mortem examination, to determine the exact cause of death.

The incident has deeply affected those involved in the tour. A senior official from the local Bhutanese travel operator described the event as one of the most shocking experiences of his career, stating that he had never encountered a similar tragedy during his 26 years in the tourism industry.

Bhutanese authorities and members of the royal family have reportedly extended their condolences to the victim’s family. The travel agency is working closely with the woman’s relatives and traveling companion while coordinating with relevant authorities, including Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic representatives. The incident serves as a reminder of the physical challenges associated with high-altitude trekking and the importance of health precautions when visiting mountainous destinations.
