Singapore's Workers' Party has re-elected Pritam Singh as its secretary-general despite his previous court conviction and removal as the country's Leader of the Opposition. The decision was made during the party's leadership meeting, where members voted to retain Singh as the head of Singapore's largest opposition party.
Party officials said Singh addressed members during the meeting and answered questions regarding his legal case before the voting took place. The leadership election reportedly received overwhelming support from party cadres.
Court Conviction Did Not End Party Leadership
Pritam Singh was convicted by a Singapore court in 2025 for providing false testimony to a parliamentary committee during an investigation involving a fellow party member. His appeal against the conviction was later dismissed by the High Court.

Following the conviction, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong removed Singh from the official post of Leader of the Opposition, stating that the position had become untenable under the circumstances.
Workers' Party Stands Behind Its Leader
Despite losing the parliamentary title, the Workers' Party chose not to nominate another lawmaker for the Leader of the Opposition role. Party leaders maintained that the head of the largest opposition party should continue to be recognised as the opposition leader.
The party said retaining Singh reflected its commitment to democratic principles, internal decision-making and due process. Senior party leaders confirmed that a strong majority supported Singh's continued leadership.
Political Role Remains Vacant
In Singapore, the Leader of the Opposition is appointed by the Prime Minister rather than being a constitutional office. The role provides additional allowances, staff support and access to confidential government briefings.
Since the Workers' Party declined to nominate a replacement, the position has remained vacant following Singh's removal earlier this year.
What Does This Mean for Singapore Politics?
The decision highlights the Workers' Party's confidence in Pritam Singh despite his legal setbacks. Political analysts say the move signals party unity ahead of future parliamentary challenges and reinforces Singh's influence within the opposition.
The Workers' Party currently holds 10 seats in Parliament and remains Singapore's strongest opposition political force.
Why Is This Development Important?
The re-election of Pritam Singh demonstrates how internal party support can differ from official government appointments. While Singh no longer serves as Leader of the Opposition, his continued leadership of the Workers' Party ensures he remains one of Singapore's most influential opposition figures as the country's political landscape continues to evolve.
