On June 28, SpaceX successfully placed SiriusXM's SXM-11 communications satellite into orbit from Cape Canaveral, marking another key achievement in the company’s active 2026 launch campaign.
The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off within a four-hour window starting at 10:25 p.m. EDT on June 28 (2:25 a.m. UTC on June 29). Measuring around 15,000 pounds (approx. 7.5 tons), the SXM-11 satellite was aimed at achieving a geosynchronous transfer orbit, with separation expected around 30 minutes post-launch, as per Spaceflight Now.
The SXM-11 satellite is integral to SiriusXM's strategy to upgrade its satellite infrastructure. It is set to replace two older satellites—XM-5, launched in 2010, and Sirius FM-5, deployed in 2009.
Constructed by Lanteris Space Systems, a subsidiary of Texas-based Intuitive Machines, this satellite utilizes the IM-1300 platform, standing nearly 230 feet tall with solar panels that can extend up to 106 feet when fully deployed.
SiriusXM has identified SXM-11 as the most potent high-powered satellite within its operations. According to a statement reported by Spaceflight Now, this satellite is anticipated to enhance signal clarity, broaden service reach in Alaska, and bolster audio entertainment and information services throughout the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean.
Identified as B1085, the Falcon 9 first-stage booster successfully completed its 17th mission. This reusable booster had previously played pivotal roles in significant missions including NASA's Crew-9, U.S. Space Force launches, and nine Starlink deployments.
Post-launch, the booster was expected to touch down roughly 8.5 minutes later on the SpaceX drone ship called "A Shortfall of Gravitas," stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
In a significant move earlier in January 2026, Intuitive Machines acquired Lanteris Space Systems, previously known as Maxar Space Systems, in a deal valued at approximately $800 million, enhancing their satellite production capabilities.
The preceding satellite in this series, SXM-10, launched in June 2025, is anticipated to remain operational until 2040, according to SiriusXM's recent financial disclosures to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The successful launch of SXM-11 exemplifies SpaceX's robust launch activity throughout 2026, with the company having completed nine missions as of mid-June, showcasing its capacity to handle a consistent volume of commercial and governmental space operations.
