Steve Smith seemed composed and self-assured while revealing Australia’s playing XI for the initial Ashes Test. As he embarks on what could be his last Ashes series, Smith has notably shifted from his previous intense demeanor to a more relaxed and easy-going approach.
With regular captain Pat Cummins sidelined due to injury, Smith steps into the leadership role for the seventh time since his stint as captain ended in 2018 following the ball-tampering incident in South Africa. Despite anticipations of the scandal being brought up by England fans, Smith appeared untroubled, even playfully jesting about it with a former England spinner, showcasing his current mindset.
The 36-year-old expressed that he feels significantly more “chilled” now, having gained insights from his cricketing and leadership journey. He aims to maintain calm during play, allowing his team members to execute their roles without unnecessary stress. His straightforward leadership philosophy centers on fostering a relaxed environment that empowers players.
Smith acknowledged the absence of star bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood as “unfortunate,” but views it as an opportunity for others to shine. He commended Scott Boland for his Test consistency and welcomed Brendan Doggett, excited about the fresh energy they can bring to the squad.
Discussing England’s aggressive batting approach known as “Bazball,” Smith indicated that Australia might need to adopt a more defensive strategy at times. He reassured fans that losing the first Test wouldn’t spell disaster, urging the team to keep calm and focused throughout the series.
Amidst pre-series discussions from media and former players, Smith refrained from making bold predictions or engaging in verbal exchanges, emphasizing that actions on the field matter most. He noted that Australia aims to block out external chatter and focus on what they do best.
With excitement building among the team, Smith stated they are ready to hit the ground running. After a series of practice sessions, the collective enthusiasm is palpable as they await the first Test.
In addition to his captaincy duties, Smith’s batting will be pivotal for Australia’s success. He expressed feeling “very good” at the crease recently, demonstrating a formidable record against England: 3,417 runs at an average of 56.01 in 37 Tests, complemented by 12 centuries — making him a significant challenge for England’s bowlers.
England captain Ben Stokes acknowledged Smith’s prowess, noting his consistent run-scoring against England and citing him as one of the top batters of this generation, comparing him to Joe Root for their impressive skills.
Smith steps into this Ashes series with a blend of confidence, wisdom, and calmness. Though the team faces challenges with injuries, his experience and skill set the stage for a hopeful opening Test.
