South Africa’s top police official Fannie Masemola has appeared in court over a major corruption scandal involving a multimillion-dollar government contract. The case has already led to the arrest of several senior police officers.
Masemola, who continues to serve as head of the police, faces four charges under the Public Finance Management Act. The allegations are linked to a 360 million rand ($21 million) contract intended to provide health and well-being services to police personnel.
Authorities claim that the contract was awarded irregularly and that some officers received bribes from companies involved in the deal. The contract has since been canceled as investigations continue.
The police chief made his first court appearance to formally face the charges, although he has not yet entered a plea. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison or a financial penalty.
The case is part of a broader investigation into corruption within the police service, ordered by President Cyril Ramaphosa. A commission of inquiry and a parliamentary probe are both examining the allegations.
Prosecutors have indicated that Masemola’s case may be combined with that of several other accused individuals, including high-ranking police officers and a businessman linked to the controversial contract. Many of the accused have been released on bail.
Despite calls for his resignation, Masemola has stated that he will continue his duties unless directed otherwise by the president. The government has said it will handle the matter according to legal procedures.
