South Korea's parliament has approved a 45-day investigation into the National Election Commission following ballot paper shortages that disrupted voting during the June 3 local elections. The inquiry was approved during a plenary session amid growing public concern over the handling of the election process.
Ballot Shortages Trigger National Debate
The controversy emerged after multiple polling stations across the country reported shortages of ballot papers. The issue led to temporary voting suspensions and sparked criticism from voters, political parties and civil society groups who questioned the preparedness of election authorities.
Special Committee To Lead Inquiry
A special parliamentary committee consisting of lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party, the opposition People Power Party and smaller political groups has been formed to conduct the investigation. Lawmakers said the probe would examine possible violations of voting rights and identify weaknesses in election administration.
Election Commission Faces Pressure
The ballot paper issue has already resulted in significant fallout, including the resignation of the National Election Commission chief. President Lee Jae Myung has also called for a comprehensive review to determine how the shortages occurred and how similar problems can be prevented in future elections.
Voting Disruptions Reported Nationwide
Election officials confirmed that ballot shortages occurred at 91 polling stations across South Korea. Voting was temporarily suspended at 26 locations, creating long delays for voters and prompting protests outside several vote-counting centers after the election.
Commission Promises Full Cooperation
Acting Election Commission Secretary-General Kang Dong-wan said the agency was deeply disappointed by the failures and would fully cooperate with the parliamentary investigation, law enforcement authorities and internal audits. Officials pledged to provide all necessary records to investigators.
Focus On Future Election Reforms
Lawmakers said the inquiry is not only about identifying mistakes but also about restoring public confidence in the electoral system. The findings are expected to shape future election management reforms aimed at ensuring fair, transparent and uninterrupted voting across the country.
