South Korean prosecutors have requested an arrest warrant for Han Hak-ja, the current leader of the Unification Church, popularly known as the Moonies, in connection with allegations of bribing former first lady Kim Keon-hee and conservative lawmaker KweonSeong-dong. This latest development marks a major escalation in an ongoing investigation into political corruption linked to the church.
The allegations revolve around Han’s purported role in providing expensive gifts to Kim Keon-hee in 2022. Prosecutors claim that these gifts were given to gain favor with her husband, former President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was removed from office in April 2024 following his attempt to impose martial law. Kim was arrested last month and indicted for bribery and stock market manipulation, charges she denies. Yoon is also facing trial over his brief declaration of martial law.
The investigation into Han Hak-ja focuses on whether she orchestrated or facilitated these acts, including luxury gifts, to influence political decisions. Prosecutors have stated that Han’s cooperation in questioning raised concerns about potential evidence tampering, prompting the request for an arrest warrant.
Han was questioned for nearly 10 hours on Wednesday by the prosecution. Authorities allege she violated multiple laws, including the Political Funds Act, the Anti-Graft Law, incitement to destroy evidence, and embezzlement. The prosecutors argue that arresting Han is necessary to ensure the integrity of the investigation and to prevent any interference with evidence collection.
The Unification Church has rejected the need for Han’s arrest. Church representatives say she poses no risk of fleeing or destroying evidence and has cooperated fully with the authorities despite health concerns. Han assumed leadership of the church following the death of her late husband, Reverend Sun Myung Moon, in 2012.
The Unification Church was founded in 1954 by Reverend Moon and has always been a subject of public scrutiny. Its teachings focus on Moon’s claim as the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and the church is known for organizing large mass weddings. Over the years, the church has expanded into various sectors, including media, tourism, and food distribution, often attracting criticism for its influence and business practices.
This investigation has drawn significant media attention in South Korea and internationally. Critics argue that the church’s involvement in political matters raises concerns about corruption and the undue influence of religious organizations in politics. Supporters, however, defend the church, emphasizing its religious and charitable activities.
The case highlights the challenges South Korea faces in maintaining transparency in politics, especially when powerful organizations intersect with political leaders. How the prosecution handles Han’s arrest and the church’s role could have lasting impacts on public trust in both religious institutions and the political system.
Authorities are expected to present their case to the court soon regarding Han’s arrest. The coming weeks will be closely watched, as any decision will have significant implications for South Korea’s legal and political landscape. Analysts also note that the outcome may affect public perception of the Unification Church and its influence over political affairs in the country.
