The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, marking the beginning of the country's most important rainy season. The onset came on June 4, three days later than the normal date of June 1 and several days behind the department's earlier forecast.
The arrival of the monsoon brought widespread rainfall across many parts of Kerala, with heavy showers recorded in several districts. In response to the changing weather conditions, the IMD issued orange alerts for multiple districts, warning residents about the possibility of intense rainfall and localized disruptions.
Meteorologists reported that favorable atmospheric conditions allowed the monsoon to advance into Kerala, Lakshadweep, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, the Arabian Sea, and sections of the Bay of Bengal. Weather experts expect the system to continue progressing northward over the coming days, bringing rainfall to additional regions across the country.
Heavy rains have already begun affecting daily life in several areas. In Kerala’s Idukki district, an under-construction multi-storey building collapsed amid adverse weather conditions, although authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported. Officials continue to monitor vulnerable areas as rainfall intensity increases.
The monsoon's arrival is considered highly significant for India’s agriculture sector, which relies heavily on seasonal rainfall for crop cultivation. Farmers, water resource managers, and policymakers closely track the monsoon because it directly influences food production, reservoir levels, rural incomes, and overall economic activity.
Weather agencies have also issued alerts for other parts of the country. Thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and heavy rainfall are expected in parts of Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, and several other states. Meanwhile, Delhi received light rain and witnessed a drop in temperatures after days of warm and humid weather conditions.
According to the IMD, seasonal rainfall during 2026 is expected to remain near normal despite the delayed onset. Authorities have advised residents in areas under weather alerts to stay updated on forecasts and take necessary precautions as the monsoon season strengthens across India in the coming weeks.
