In a significant achievement, SpaceX's Starship successfully completed its first test flight after the company became publicly traded, marking a pivotal moment for the world's largest rocket system.
Following the mission's success, Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, shared exciting news on X: "Starship is intact and floating in the ocean, transmitting data!"
The spacecraft executed a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean, remaining intact as it continued to relay flight telemetry. Employees at SpaceX's Starbase celebrated this notable achievement as the vehicle successfully completed its mission.
During the livestream, SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot expressed his excitement: "I'm losing it right now! This is the first time we've successfully put an intact Starship in water."
He added, "This is a dream scenario for our team in pursuit of heat shield data."
This mission followed a previous test in May that showcased the company's third-generation Starship design, aiming to replicate significant flight objectives and confirm enhancements made since then.
The 13th test flight successfully deployed 20 Starlink V3 satellites, providing crucial data as SpaceX prepares to expand its satellite internet offerings.
Lasting about an hour, the mission focused on assessing upgrades to the spacecraft's heat shield during its return through the atmosphere.
Post-May flight, SpaceX stated it had undertaken several hardware and software modifications to tackle challenges from previous tests.
While the mission met its main goals, the landing burn of the booster did not go as planned. Huot noted that not all 13 engines ignited as expected for the landing burn.
"It seems we didn't ignite all engines for the initial landing burn as we intended," he detailed. "We were aiming for a smoother touchdown, but it came in with considerable velocity."
This successful launch follows earlier attempts that were halted automatically when booster engines failed to ignite. The mission was postponed due to visibility and weather concerns before Friday's successful attempt.
Friday's mission marked the first Starship test flight following SpaceX's public trading debut in June. The company continues expanding Starlink while devising plans for AI data centers in space.
Starship is vital for NASA's upcoming lunar exploration program; SpaceX is under contract to modify Starship to serve as a lunar landing vehicle.
After an image of Starship soaring past the Moon was shared, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman commented, "Looks clear SpaceX knows our trajectory!" He further noted, "When Starship becomes operational, its capabilities will be revolutionary, ensuring we maintain a presence on the Moon again!"
