Death Toll Rises to 12 in Sri Lanka Care Home Fire

Death Toll Rises to 12 in Sri Lanka Care Home Fire

Post by : Shakul

A tragic fire at a residential care facility in Sri Lanka has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, prompting authorities to launch a major investigation into the cause of the disaster. Officials confirmed that the death toll increased after additional bodies were discovered during a search of the damaged building.

The fire broke out at the Maupiya Sewana Elders Home, a center that housed elderly residents as well as young individuals requiring special care. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and conducted rescue operations as flames engulfed parts of the facility.

Authorities reported that six people sustained injuries and were transferred to medical facilities for treatment. Meanwhile, more than 50 residents and staff members were safely evacuated and relocated to a nearby government-operated shelter following the incident.

As part of the investigation, police arrested the manager of the care home and brought him to the site while forensic experts continued examining the wreckage. Investigators are interviewing survivors, staff members, and local residents to determine how the fire started and whether any safety regulations were violated.

According to police officials, the youngest victim was a 17-year-old resident. The discovery highlighted the diverse group of individuals living at the facility and underscored the severity of the tragedy that affected both elderly residents and younger occupants.

Forensic teams spent hours combing through the burned structure, where they located several additional victims. The discovery raised the official death toll and intensified concerns about emergency preparedness and fire safety measures within residential care institutions.

Authorities have not yet announced the exact cause of the fire, and investigations remain ongoing. Government officials have pledged a thorough inquiry into the incident, while local communities continue mourning one of the deadliest care home fires reported in Sri Lanka in recent years.
