Sri Lanka Court Bars Rajapaksa in Easter Attack Probe

Sri Lanka Court Bars Rajapaksa in Easter Attack Probe

Post by : Shakul

A Sri Lankan court has imposed a travel ban on former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and two former military officers as investigations continue into the deadly 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.

The order was issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after reviewing a request submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is actively probing the coordinated terror attacks.

The Easter Sunday bombings, carried out on April 21, 2019, targeted churches and luxury hotels across Sri Lanka and killed 270 people, including 11 Indian nationals, in one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s history.

Court officials confirmed that the decision restricts Gotabaya Rajapaksa, along with two former senior military officials, from travelling overseas during the ongoing investigation period.

The CID argued that travel restrictions were necessary to ensure cooperation with the investigation and to prevent any possible interference in the probe.

The court accepted the submission and directed that the travel ban remain in place until further orders are issued based on the progress of the investigation.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was the President of Sri Lanka at the time of the 2019 attacks, has previously faced scrutiny over security lapses and intelligence failures linked to the bombings.

The investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks has remained a politically sensitive and legally complex issue in Sri Lanka, involving multiple agencies and high-profile officials.

Authorities continue to examine intelligence reports, security decisions, and administrative actions that preceded the coordinated suicide attacks carried out across the island nation.

The case is expected to remain under judicial and investigative review as Sri Lanka seeks accountability and clarity over one of its most devastating terror incidents.
