Sunderland and Everton played out a lively 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light on Monday, as Iliman Ndiaye's brilliant opening goal was neutralised by a deflected effort from Granit Xhaka.
Newly promoted Sunderland continued their strong start to the season, rising to fourth with 18 points from 10 matches. Everton remain 14th on 12 points, still searching for consistent form.
Ndiaye put the visitors ahead in the 15th minute with a moment of individual quality. Receiving the ball on the right flank, he weaved past four defenders before bending a precise shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Everton controlled the early phase and wasted several chances to extend their lead: James Garner's effort went just wide, Jack Grealish hit the post, and Thierno Barry failed to convert from close range.
Sunderland grew into the contest after the half-hour mark and finally levelled 40 seconds into the second half. Xhaka's low strike took a sharp deflection off James Tarkowski and wrong-footed goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Both teams pressed for a winner thereafter, Sunderland managing more possession while Everton looked dangerous on the break, but neither side could find a decisive goal.
Xhaka later expressed his frustration, suggesting his side had thrown away three points with too many simple mistakes early on, though he praised the teams second-half response and acknowledged they lacked a slice of good fortune.
Everton manager David Moyes rued missed opportunities, noting the bright start and fine opener but stressing the need to finish games of this nature.
The result summed up Sunderland's resilience and Everton's profligacy in front of goal, leaving both clubs with positives to build on and clear areas to address as the season progresses.
