The Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) has partnered with local authorities and key stakeholders in Suphan Buri Province to launch a model road safety project aimed at reducing traffic accidents and promoting mandatory motor vehicle insurance. The initiative was discussed during a working group meeting held at the Suphan Buri Provincial Hall on June 11, 2026.
Government Agencies Unite for Safer Roads
The meeting was chaired by Suphan Buri Governor Nattapong Sanguanjit and attended by representatives from government agencies, local administrative organizations, private sector groups and research institutions. Officials emphasized the importance of collaboration in creating sustainable road safety solutions across the province.
Data and Technology Drive Accident Prevention
Suphan Buri has adopted a data-driven approach to road safety by identifying accident-prone locations through Red Map analysis. The province is also expanding the use of AI-powered traffic cameras to monitor road user behavior, improve law enforcement and identify key risk factors that contribute to accidents.
Helmet Campaigns Target Young Road Users
Authorities are also promoting road safety awareness among children and young people through educational campaigns and Helmet Bank projects in schools. These initiatives aim to encourage safe driving habits and build a long-term culture of road discipline from an early age.
OIC Expands Successful Pilot Programme
The OIC explained that the project builds on the success of a similar road safety programme implemented in Prachinburi Province in 2025. Following positive results, the initiative has now been expanded to four pilot provinces including Suphan Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Sawan and Prachinburi.
Focus Shifts from Compensation to Prevention
Officials highlighted that while mandatory motor insurance plays a key role in compensating accident victims, the project’s primary objective is prevention. Under the concept of “From Compensation to Prevention,” authorities aim to reduce risks before accidents occur through education, infrastructure improvements and community participation.
Motorcycle Users Remain Highest Risk Group
Research conducted by the Thailand Development Research Institute found that motorcycle riders account for 87.5 percent of road accident deaths in Suphan Buri. Although fatalities are projected to decline, officials said several districts remain high-risk zones and will require targeted safety measures. Authorities believe the combined use of data, technology and local cooperation will help create safer roads and improve quality of life for residents.
