Clean Air Travel: A Rising Trend Among Tourists

As the year draws to a close, the urge to travel has intensified, particularly in light of the heavy pollution enveloping many Indian cities. The Air Quality Index frequently soars into hazardous levels, making clean air a sought-after luxury. Consequently, families are opting for “aircations”, seeking locations with pristine skies and low AQI values where they can genuinely unwind.

Although Goa has traditionally been a favorite, travelers find it increasingly overcrowded and pricey. With soaring flight costs and accommodation fees, alternative destinations like Vietnam are emerging as attractive options. Cities such as Saigon and Hanoi brim with culture, delectable cuisine, and fascinating sights. For a tranquil escape from urban hustle, beaches in Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Con Dao Island, and Ninh Van Bay offer stunning views and inviting atmospheres.

Thailand remains a popular choice, particularly among beach enthusiasts. While Bangkok is familiar territory, the serene coasts of Phuket and Krabi provide access to idyllic beaches and various outdoor activities. Others flock to Koh Samui or the serene hills of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where tasty food and clean air abound, eliminating the need for air purifiers.

Sri Lanka stands out for those seeking a holistic experience, boasting beautiful coastlines, untouched highlands, sprawling tea estates, historical temples, and fresh air across the land. Destinations like Galle serve as peaceful retreats from the polluted environments prevalent in Indian cities, especially during winter.

For travelers seeking ultimate tranquility, Bhutan offers a slower-paced, clean-air environment with breathtaking scenery. Visitors can explore the capital, Thimphu, take in the magnificent Punakha Dzong, hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest monastery, or traverse high mountain passes such as Dochula and Chele La, showcasing nature's tranquility.

For those preferring to remain in India, several southern and northeastern locations provide refreshing air. Hill stations like Ooty in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad in Kerala often record AQI below 20, allowing visitors to breathe freely. The Northeast is also among the country’s cleanest areas, with destinations like Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh offering activities such as hiking and rafting amidst vast skies. Such serene experiences appear increasingly rare in northern Indian cities today.

As pollution levels continue to rise each winter, the demand for clean air becomes a crucial aspect of holiday experiences. Travelers are shifting their focus from mere landscapes to locations that prioritize fresh air, marking the growing trend of “aircations” in holiday planning.
