Iga Swiatek showcased her exceptional skills by defeating American fifth seed Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-1, 6-2, propelling herself into the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday.
The Polish fourth seed, a six-time Grand Slam champion, began the match aggressively, quickly garnering a 5-0 lead before Pegula managed to score her first game, thus averting a complete shutout in the opening set. Swiatek remained in total command, surrendering just three games throughout the encounter.
The second set mirrored the first, with Swiatek relentlessly pressuring from the baseline and concluding the match with ease. She recorded 15 winners, significantly overshadowing Pegula's six, underscoring her commanding presence on the court.
This victory marks Swiatek's initial win against a top-10 player this year, signaling a positive shift since partnering with former Rafael Nadal coach Francisco Roig.
After the match, Swiatek expressed confidence and satisfaction with her game execution under pressure, emphasizing her sense of control from the outset.
This result is crucial for Swiatek as she gears up for the French Open starting May 24, where she aims to win her fifth title at Roland Garros and further solidify her impressive clay-court record.
With the early exit of world number one Aryna Sabalenka, who fell to Sorana Cirstea, Swiatek now faces an encouraging path in Rome towards claiming her first clay-court title since her 2024 French Open win.
In the semi-finals, Swiatek will challenge the victor of the match between Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina.
