The Sydney Sixers made a powerful comeback in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025, rebounding from a prior disappointing 42 all-out loss. They handed the previously undefeated Hobart Hurricanes their first defeat of the season in a match that showcased remarkable resilience, skill, and high-pressure performances.
Batting first, the Sixers recorded a total of 147 runs across their 20 overs. A crucial 75-run partnership between Sophia Dunkley and Ellyse Perry bolstered their innings. Dunkley’s notable contribution of 50 runs from 46 deliveries, including eight boundaries, set the groundwork for the innings. However, the Hurricanes’ bowlers put pressure on the middle and lower order, leading to a collapse that saw the Sixers lose five wickets for just four runs. Nevertheless, they achieved a defendable target, setting up for a tense run chase.
Confidently approaching the chase, the Hurricanes were led by Ellyse Villani, who scored a resilient 42 not out. With wickets in hand, they looked poised to chase down the target. However, Ash Gardner’s brilliant bowling effort turned the tide, as she took 4 wickets for 36 runs.
Gardner’s remarkable impact was evident during her last over, which proved pivotal. Before that over, she'd allowed 34 runs in her preceding three overs, with the Hurricanes needing 19 from the final three overs and four wickets still in hand. Gardner struck immediately, claiming Hayley Silver-Holmes on her first delivery, followed by the dismissal of Molly Strano on the next ball. Her final delivery sent Lauren Smith back to the pavilion, caught brilliantly by Dunkley at extra cover. This left only Linsey Smith and Villani at the crease, considerably diminishing the Hurricanes' chances of victory.
Lauren Cheatle wrapped up the match for the Sixers by taking out Linsey Smith when they needed just one run, securing an exciting 11-run win with eight balls remaining. The contest underscored the Sixers’ determination and the role of experienced players in high-stakes situations.
Not only did this win halt the Hurricanes’ unbeaten run, but it also emphasized the significance of all-round contributions in T20 cricket. Dunkley’s batting and Gardner’s exceptional bowling were key, illustrating that teamwork and grit can help overcome setbacks.
Brief scores: Sydney Sixers 147/9 in 20 overs (Sophia Dunkley 50; Heather Graham 4-29) defeated Hobart Hurricanes 136 in 18.4 overs (Ellyse Villani 42*; Ash Gardner 4-36) by 11 runs.
This victory keeps Sydney in the running for the WBBL title, demonstrating their ability to bounce back after difficult losses, leveraging key players during crucial moments. The Sixers will seek to build on this momentum in their future matches, while the Hurricanes aim to recover from their first loss of the season.
