Sydney Sweeney's box office misfortunes persist with her new film Christy, a biopic centered on boxing champion Christy Martin. Released on November 7, the film is now recognized for one of the lowest wide-release openings in Hollywood, raising doubts about its future at the box office.
Directed by David Michôd, Christy premiered on 2,184 screens across North America. Despite the extensive release, it garnered only $1.31 million during its opening weekend, averaging about $600 per theatre across three days. According to Box Office Mojo, this dismal performance places Christy among the ten worst openings for a wide-release film in North America, not counting re-releases. In fact, many films released during the pandemic performed better, underlining the depth of its underachievement. Previously, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (2012) held the unfortunate record with just $444,000 from its opening weekend.
The international reception has been similarly grim, with approximately $39,000 earned outside of North America. The worldwide total stands at an unsatisfactory $1.35 million after three days, especially disheartening given the film's production budget exceeding $15 million, indicating severe financial setbacks ahead.
About Christy and Sydney Sweeney’s Transformation
Christy illustrates the journey and challenges of Christy Martin, an iconic female boxer celebrated for her groundbreaking achievements and tragic story. Sweeney underwent a significant physical transformation for her portrayal, gaining considerable muscle mass to accurately reflect the boxer's physique. The cast also features notable talents such as Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brien, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.
However, despite the considerable effort, the film's weak box office performance indicates it struggled to resonate with moviegoers and critics alike.
Ongoing Challenges for Sydney Sweeney
Christy represents Sydney Sweeney's fourth consecutive box office disappointment. Her earlier projects also faced financial struggles:
Eden (budget: $55 million) raked in only $2.5 million.
Both Immaculate and Madame Web have reportedly not managed to break even.
This sequence of lackluster performances raises concerns regarding Sweeney’s current box office appeal, even as she pursues challenging roles.
Future Prospects for Sydney Sweeney
In spite of the recent challenges, Sydney Sweeney has another project upcoming — The Housemaid, a psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig, scheduled for release on December 19. Industry analysts will be eager to see if this film can turn her box office fortunes around.
Christy’s lackluster debut serves as a pointed reminder of the hurdles biopics and sports dramas face in today's fiercely competitive cinematic landscape. Although Sydney Sweeney's dedication to her role was evident, the film’s failure to attract viewers likely means it will be more remembered for its disappointing box office figures than for any artistic accomplishments.
