In a gripping matchup on Tuesday night, Syracuse secured a narrow 78-73 victory against Monmouth at home. The game was intense, filled with rapid-fire plays, crucial shots, and robust defense from both squads. Entering the game with a perfect 3-0 record, Syracuse was determined to continue their winning streak, while Monmouth pushed hard until the very end.
Leading the scoring for Syracuse was Donnie Freeman, who netted 18 points, consistently hitting crucial baskets during key moments. Nate Kingz contributed significantly with 15 points, establishing a solid presence on the court. Naithan George delivered an exemplary all-around performance, ending up with 12 points, nine assists, and six rebounds, showcasing his playmaking abilities.
J.J. Starling chipped in with 11 points and landed a vital three-pointer as Monmouth began to close in. Syracuse executed their shooting effectively, achieving 50% accuracy for the game, with an impressive 60.9% in the second half, allowing them to once lead by 14 points.
Monmouth, despite being 1-3 going into the match, fought valiantly. Justin Ray delivered a standout performance with a career-high of 25 points, highlighted by four crucial three-pointers that kept his team in the contest.
Stefanos Spartalis matched his best performance, contributing 18 points. Jack Collins added 11 points along with six rebounds and five assists, proving to be a key player for Monmouth. They capitalized on Syracuse's struggles, particularly at the free-throw line, where the Orange missed 11 shots in the second half.
Though Monmouth's leading scorer, Jason Rivera-Torres, faced challenges, managing only seven points due to foul troubles, he still made a significant play with a remarkable block on a Syracuse layup. This block set the stage for a fast break that culminated in another three-pointer by Ray, narrowing the gap to 67-60.
Syracuse's response came quickly, with Starling hitting a crucial three-pointer to restore an 11-point lead. However, Monmouth fought back, with Collins stealing a rebound and sinking a jumper to make it a 73-67 game with under two minutes to play. The tension escalated as both teams vied for a strong finish.
Starling managed to convert one of his two free throws, followed by Rivera-Torres scoring a layup to further cut the deficit. A monumental three-pointer from Collins brought the score to 74-72 with just 36 seconds left, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Freeman answered back with a pair of free throws, giving Syracuse a slight cushion. Rivera-Torres hit one of his free throws to close it to 76-73. In a last scramble, Bryce Zephir missed two free throws, handing Monmouth another opportunity. However, Rivera-Torres's final three-point shot fell short, securing the victory for Syracuse.
The contest was competitive from the outset, with Monmouth even leading at 22-18 in the first half before Syracuse unleashed a powerful 16-4 run to take control. The second half was action-packed, featuring consecutive dunks orchestrated by George.
Ultimately, Syracuse improved to 4-0, displaying effective teamwork, precision shooting, and composure during critical moments. Monmouth also gained admiration for their grit and notable individual performances.
