Taiwan has strongly criticized recent Chinese Coast Guard patrols conducted east of the island, describing the operations as a provocative action that threatens regional stability and challenges Taiwan’s sovereignty. The remarks came after Chinese vessels entered waters near Taiwan following Beijing’s objections to planned maritime boundary discussions between Japan and the Philippines.
Taiwanese authorities reported that several Chinese Coast Guard ships carried out what Beijing described as a special maritime law enforcement operation in waters east of Taiwan. In response, Taiwan dispatched its own Coast Guard vessels to monitor the situation and issue warnings, eventually escorting the Chinese ships away from restricted areas.
Speaking before parliament, Taiwan’s Defence Minister Wellington Koo accused China of attempting to expand its presence and influence in strategically important waters surrounding the island. He stated that the operation appeared designed to create a perception that the eastern waters of Taiwan fall under Chinese control, a move that Taiwan views as a direct challenge to its territorial claims.
The incident comes amid growing tensions across the region. China has expressed strong opposition to plans by Japan and the Philippines to begin formal talks on maritime boundary delimitation, particularly because the discussions involve waters located near Taiwan. Beijing continues to reject any recognition of Taiwanese sovereignty and maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory.
Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council said Chinese maritime activities have increased significantly in recent weeks. Officials cited repeated operations near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands, research vessel deployments, and expanded Coast Guard patrols as evidence of a broader campaign aimed at increasing pressure on the self-governed island.
Taiwanese officials also warned that such actions are not only military or maritime in nature but are part of a wider strategy involving psychological and information warfare. Authorities believe these operations are intended to influence public perception while testing Taiwan’s response capabilities and regional partnerships.
While the Chinese vessels reportedly left Taiwan’s waters early Monday, the government in Taipei has pledged to maintain close coordination between the military and Coast Guard to safeguard maritime security. The latest developments underscore the continuing tensions between China and Taiwan as both sides remain locked in a long-running dispute over sovereignty, security, and control of strategic waters in the Indo-Pacific region.
