Taiwan opposition leader Cheng Li-wun has called for renewed dialogue with China, saying that communication between both sides of the Taiwan Strait remains essential for maintaining long-term peace and regional stability. Speaking during a visit to Washington, Cheng emphasized that her party supports Taiwan’s defense while also encouraging diplomatic engagement with Beijing.
Cheng, who chairs the Kuomintang Party, said avoiding conflict should remain a priority for all parties involved. She noted that discussions with China do not mean compromising Taiwan’s democratic system, freedom, or security. According to Cheng, dialogue and deterrence can work together to reduce tensions and prevent military confrontation.
The visit comes at a time of increasing uncertainty in relations between Taiwan, China and the United States. Beijing continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and has increased military activities around the island in recent years. Taiwan’s government has repeatedly expressed concern about these actions and has called for stronger international support.
During her trip, Cheng met American lawmakers, policy experts and government representatives to explain her party’s approach toward cross-strait relations. She argued that maintaining open communication channels with Beijing could help preserve peace and economic stability in the region while reducing the risk of conflict.
The issue of defense spending also featured prominently during discussions in Washington. Some US lawmakers voiced concerns about Taiwan’s reduced defense budget proposal and stressed the importance of strengthening deterrence against potential threats. Cheng responded that her party supports necessary defense investments but seeks greater transparency regarding spending plans.
Cheng also defended her recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing it as an opportunity to discuss peaceful solutions to cross-strait issues. She said she believes dialogue remains the most effective path to preventing war and maintaining regional prosperity.
The United States continues to oppose any attempt to change Taiwan’s status by force and remains committed to supporting the island’s defensive capabilities. As tensions persist across the Taiwan Strait, the debate over balancing military preparedness and diplomatic engagement is expected to remain central to Taiwan’s political future.
